Tell me you don't know what a DAC is without telling me you don't know what a DAC is. ;) *Every* piece of digital audio equipment has one or multiple DACs, including every phone, every bluetooth headphone/earbuds, etc. It's how you get any kind of sound out of a digital signal, because speakers/drivers are almost always analog.

You were correct with the walkman dac, the difference you hear is the headphones vs earbuds, different tuning. Nothing to do with the walkman.

Don't know if it counts as a modern retro item, but my favourite is the Sangean WR-11 radio with bluetooth that I bought 10 years ago and use every day with joy. Fits the retro look in my book with solid wooden frame, solid stiff clicky controlls and no set up. Just AM, FM, Bluetooth and off, with a tuning- and volume wheel. No more, no less. :)

It's me, yet another audiophile to say you mixed up DAC (digital to analog converter) with DAP (digital audio player). Anything that loads digital files has a DAC out of necessity. You literally would not be able to hear the music without it. Your phone has a DAC. Whatever sound device in your computer has a DAC. A DAP on the other hand is simply a device that is specially designed to play audio and generally not have other features because that's not the focus of the device. So I think the thing that is really going to make people mad is that, while Sony does make very nice DAPs that are fairly high quality, the Sony Walkman line of DAPs are not performance focused, Sony makes lifestyle enthusiast DAPs. You don't buy a Walkman because it's the best at what it does, you buy it for the look and the style and the history of the Walkman brand. It's good at what it does, but you can get something that competes on pretty even footing for way less than a Walkman, and if you care more about audio quality than user experience you can get a real cheap device like the Shanling M0 Pro that stomps most things well above its price range, but has a touch screen that can feel a little unresponsive at times. Good audio quality doesn't need to cost you an arm and a leg, but it's a two part balancing act of how much are you willing to spend and how much do you value the ease of use with that experience. I myself bought a Lotoo Paw 5000 Mk. II for about $350 and a pair of Letshuoer S12 IEM's for $150 that I wouldn't trade for the world. It's as far up the rung as I care to go (I've tried more expensive IEM's than the Letshuoer S12's and if you ask me they simply are not as good, and the amount of money I would have to go up to MAYBE get better results I am not willing to spend). The quality of audio I can achieve with this combination is insanely high and frankly just makes me enjoy what I'm listening to more. You do run into the world of diminishing returns rather quickly, and none of that matters if what you're listening to was recorded on garbage to begin with, so most people will tell you it's not really worth only seeking out 96KHz 24 bit or higher audio. 44.1KHz is fine and gives you a lot more definition and texture than a 320 kbps MP3 will. So why use a DAP at all? Why get a device that only does music when you have a phone that does everything? Well, you remember what you said about the Playdate in this video? About how it's a great device when you want to take up brain activity with something but not pull out the phone and scroll through tiktok or whatever social media? Hey! Guess what a DAP does! I enjoy listening to music as a primary activity, not to do while I'm doing something else. Sitting down and listening to an album and its contents as my main focus. And having a device that is disconnected from the internet and can't get messages and doesn't show you the news and won't let you check in on how your ex is doing, something that only plays music, is a really great way to zone out and vibe. It's comforting in its simplicity. Not to mention when you have a device that feels good to use, it's fun spinning the play wheel or pushing the clicky buttons, the act of using the device is enjoyable. It gives a different experience to listening to music that you don't get from swiping a touch screen and loading up a streaming app that charges you monthly to listen to your sound library and who knows how long this service will actually last and when the internet goes down you can't listen to that Steely Dan album you've been meaning to get to because you don't have it on your own device it's somewhere in the cloud but you can't access the cloud right now. Owning the music you have and never having to think about the reality of where your music is coming from and how you actually access it feels good. By the way, if you're looking for places to get high fidelity music, HDTracks is nice, I generally prefer Qobuz over it, if you're willing to use a proxy Ototoy from Japan is a great place to get music shockingly (also to find regional music you wouldn't hear otherwise!), can't recommend Bandcamp enough for the artists who are small enough to still be allowed to use it since not only is it a great platform but they get paid more for it, Boomkat and Bleep are good for indie artists, 7Digital has some bigger artists, there's a bigger selection of websites than people realize.

The landline corded android has potential, for situations where cell towers are down, or times where only the landlines are working. It's a good concept, just a bad attempt at a product.

The thing with the spatial videos is that it works better on the Vision Pro itself, since the cameras are much farther apart. But also, for the iPhone video, you want to be closer, like 3-5 feet, I’ve heard. I think you were too far
